Don that Bee Suit!

Beekeeping has been a thriving industry spanning across the continents since ancient times. It wasn’t until the 19th century, however, when beekeeping became popular, both as a hobby and as a profitable business venture. Its rise in popularity was largely due to the various innovations and improvements inventors made on traditional beekeeping methods and techniques.

Safety has always been one of the top concerns of people who are interested in beekeeping. Bees are naturally unpredictable creatures and don’t hesitate to attack if they feel threatened in any way. Though their sting is their only line of defense, it is very potent and lethal. A bee sting can injure a person and even cause death if the sting is not immediately treated.

Protection is essential when dealing with unpredictable creatures like bees. The face, neck, hands are the most vulnerable parts of your body, which is why one must always have a sturdy head gear and gloves when dealing with bees. There would be times, however, when you have to venture into the hive and this would require more than the essential protective gear.  One way of lessening the chances of being stung is by wearing a protective suit or a bee suit. A good suit should have proper ventilation and not inhibit movement.

A bee suit should be light-colored and made out of smooth material in order to differentiate it from the colony’s natural predators. The suit should be washed and the gloves soaked in vinegar on a regular basis because the stingers left behind on the fabric continue to emanate alarm pheromones that can attract aggressive behavior from the bees.
